The main reasons why websites use scrolling text or 'marquees' would be to save space, attract the visitor's attention by the animation or to make the page more lively, however on the internet, the most common use of animation is in advertising and because of this many users learn to filter it out, this is referred to as banner blindness. As a result the use of scrolling text to attract the user's attention frequently has the opposite effect. While other users, who don't filter out animation, find scrolling text distracting when they are trying to concentrate on other parts of the page. Because the speed of scrolling text is determined by the code, users who do read often become impatient if it scrolls too slowly or frustrated if it scrolls too quickly. Bearing all this in mind If you are to use a marquee it should be used as a focal point on a page and you should try an limit the animation on the page to the marquee itself, I personally think it still quite handy when its used to draw attention to a particlar phrase ie 'This offer end's tonight' although many people hate them, must be one of those Marmite things. .(Reply by Moderator: Richard )
